Match Report by Jon Page, The Brewmaster With the weather more like mid March & with heavy wet snow on the ground, Taverners won the toss & batted with the Lancers needing two subs for their late comers. Why people were late I shall never know as I made it in on time from Stonewall despite getting trapped behind a snowplow for a couple of miles on Hwy.7. It was obvious from the start that Sid & Mark intended to run on every shot, this produced a few run outs but also got the runs to pile up quickly. After 4 overs of this Sid called a halt as he was having difficulty sucking in air. They resumed for a while during the 6th & managed to put on 64 with Mark on 17. Dave & Anil continued in the same vein with a little less success but David made up for this with some well hit 4's. They ended their stint with 50 with Dave on 26.  Martin & Phil finished up the innings with Martin playing a restrained role but he must learn to ground his bat at the end of the run. Despite being run out several times the pair made 46 with Philip the 2nd highest scorer with 27.  Taverners score 167, quite a formidable total for 6 a side. The Lancers knew that they had to take chances to better the Taverners score & the openers Bobby & John did just that but in taking the chances they were run out too frequently ending with 34 of which John got just 9. The 2nd pair, Ossie & Rahul ran a lot less but still managed to beat the previous pair with Ossie getting 24 out of 40.  Needing some 14 runs an over the last pair tried to push the score but despite Keith getting 45 out of 47 with Joey playing his usual supporting role they were well short at the end.  After factoring in Taverners 17 wides Lancers made 138 a loss by 29. Interestingly there were only 2 outs that counted to the bowlers one for each side, the rest of the wickets fell to run outs. Taverners and Cosmos will be meeting again sometime in February for “The Bragging Bat Challenge”.
Cosmos decided to only enter a team in Division II of the MCA Six-a-Side competition.  Our performance in the recently completed Seven-a-Side was not exactly what we hoped for.  The Cosmos Lancers came out with a strong performance against Lions B, winning by 68 runs. Lancers skipper Bobby Persaud won the toss and inserted the Lions to bat.  With some tight bowling from Ossie Belle and Lennocks Castello the first pair of Lions, Lenny Premsukh and Nadir Hussain, could only muster 25 runs.  Lions captain Joe Marrast and birthday-boy Alexander Singh put up a good score of 34 thanks to some attractive stroke play from 15 year old Singh.  The final pair of Bowie Singh and Sam Kaidnath added 49 runs with somewhat frantic batting to take the Lions tally to a respectable 108 in their allotted 18 overs. Needing only 6 runs an over the Lancers first pair of John Ziesmann and Bobby Persaud punished the Lions bowling attack from the start, scoring at will.  With an opening stand of 69 runs, the Lancers were in full control.  Not to be out done the second pair of Rahul Chahar and Ossie Belle continued the melee by adding a 54-run partnership and thus overtaking the Lions score only after 12 overs.  With the target already surpassed the pair of Lennocks Castello and Keith Deonaraine batted without pressure.  They continue to tally up runs, with Castello unleashing some punishing straight drives off the bowling of Bowie Singh.  The final pair contributed a well batted 47-run partnership and a final score of 170.

A Canadian fan takes in the action as hosts New Zealand cruised to a victory in their first match, defeating Canada by nine wickets in Lincoln. Chasing Canada's meagre total of 128 all out in 29.3 overs, New Zealand reached the target in just the 20th over for the loss of one wicket. James Neesham top scored with 47 from just 20 balls and added an unbeaten 55 with the opener Harry Boam who made 29 from 54 balls. Boam and Tom Latham, the son of former international batsman Rod, had put on 75 for the opening wicket. Canada's effort with the bat, after they were put in, was forgettable with the No.8 Arsalan Qadir proving the most successful with 26 from 30 balls. They lost Hiral Patel earlier and then Doug Bracewell, son of former international Brendon, began with a double strike bowling his right-arm medium pace. Bracewell's figures of 3 for 31 from seven overs earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. Logan van Beek, the grandson of former West Indies and New Zealand Test wicketkeeper Sam Guillen, chipped in with three wickets as well. Scorecard Article sourced from CricInfo Image © Getty Images .
Canada pulled off a close win over Zimbabwe at the Village Green in Christchurch, defending a target of 201 by ten runs. At 129 for 3 after 34 overs Zimbabwe appeared on course for victory but Canada stunned them by taking the last six wickets for 62 runs. Andrew Lindsay's dismissal for 40 to the slow left-arm spin of Hiral Patel, who has played two ODIs for the senior side, was followed by the big wicket of Dean Mazhawidza, whose 75 had been a stand-out effort in an otherwise disappointing scorecard. Zain Mahmood, the new-ball bowler, returned to sniff out two wickets as Canada got their tournament campaign off to a winning start. Their innings had been carried to 210 by Usman Limbada, who made 90 from 114 balls against a disciplined Zimbabwean attack. Mazhawidza took four catches behind the stumps. At Christ College, New Zealand, Canada recovered from 37 for 6 to add a veneer of respectability to their reply to South Africa's 247 for 6 from 50 overs. A 75-run partnership between Asif Manijra (30) and Hamza Tariq (55*) allowed Canada to finish on 154 for 9 from its 50 overs to lose by 94 runs. South Africa's total had been boosted by the openers, who got into the forties, and Cody Chetty (54). Parth Desai (2 for 40) achieved Canada's best return. scorecard

On father’s day 2009 both of our teams were in action and we intended to make it a special day. An invitation went out to all members to come out with their family. Both teams were treated to delicious sandwiches for lunch, which were provided by Mrs. James (Keith’s Mom), she was celebrating her 86th birthday. The teams were lead by Alex Ashwell in the singing of happy birthday. After the games we gathered for a wonderful father’s day dinner provided by the Gazze family and friends. The dinner comprised of delightful curries and barbeque. The celebration continued well into the evening until the rain forced the party to stop
